With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what worked well in your classroom and what you want to improve. One essential aspect of classroom management is teaching classroom procedures. Today, I’ll dive into exactly how I teach classroom procedures at the start of the school year. Let’s dive in!

Why Procedures Matter in Classroom Management

Classroom procedures are the backbone of smooth classroom management. They set clear expectations for how students should interact with each other and with classroom items. Whether it’s lining up, raising hands, or using the restroom, these routines are crucial for creating a structured and productive learning environment.

My Seven-Step Process for Teaching Classroom Procedures

I’ve developed a seven-step process that makes teaching classroom procedures straightforward and effective. Here’s a breakdown of how I implement it in my classroom:

1. Introduce the Procedure Start by clearly explaining the procedure to your students. For instance, if you’re teaching a class call, say something like, “Today, we are going to learn about class calls. A class call is a way for me to get your attention and give you the next steps during transitions.”

2. Model the Procedure Physically demonstrate what the procedure looks like. For example, say, “Class class,” and then respond as the students should, “Yes yes.” Repeat this to ensure they understand.

3. Discuss What It Looks and Sounds Like Have a discussion with your students about what they observed. Ask them to describe what they saw and heard. For example, “What did it look like when I did the class call?” They might respond, “You were at a level zero, your eyes were on the teacher, and your hands were in your lap.”

4. Model the Wrong Way Show the students what the procedure looks like when done incorrectly. This helps them understand the importance of following the correct steps. For example, pretend to ignore the class call and continue talking to a friend.

5. Discuss What It Doesn’t Look and Sound Like Discuss with the students what they noticed about the incorrect demonstration. Ask, “What did you see and hear that was wrong?” They might say, “You didn’t stop talking, you didn’t respond to the call, and you were moving around.”

6. Discuss Why It’s Important Explain why following the procedure correctly is important. This step helps students understand the value behind the routine. For example, “We do it this way to be respectful of each other’s learning time and to ensure we all know what to do next.”

7. Practice Have the students practice the procedure until it becomes a habit. Aim for at least 21 repetitions, as it takes about that many times for something to become a habit.

Applying the Process: A Practical Example

Let’s go through a practical example of teaching the procedure for lining up for recess:

  1. Introduce: “Today, we’re going to learn how to line up for recess.”
  2. Model: Show them how to push in their chairs, walk to the line, and stand quietly.
  3. Discuss: “What did it look and sound like when I lined up correctly?” Students might say, “You used walking feet, your hands were to yourself, and you were at a level zero.”
  4. Model the Wrong Way: Run to the line and talk loudly with a friend.
  5. Discuss the Wrong Way: “What did you see and hear that was wrong?” Students might say, “You were running and talking loudly.”
  6. Discuss Why: “Why is it important to walk and stay quiet? To keep us safe and ensure we hear instructions.”
  7. Practice: Have two students demonstrate, then the whole class.

Tips for Consistent Reinforcement

Throughout the year, continue to revisit and practice procedures. This reinforcement helps maintain expectations and ensures students remember what to do. Integrate these steps into your daily routine to foster a structured and effective learning environment.
